Gatuiri is a Kikuyu name for “the shrubs” which were mainly found around this area. This place was famous for these shrubs and many people used them to make medicines for human and animal. The 1.100 producers of the Barichu Farmer’s Co-operative Society also operate a coffee shop on its premises catering to travellers on the highway. The income allows the society to reduce its overheads thereby increasing the farmer’s income. The society contributes to the education of children in the region by renting out the extra space on its premises to a primary school and a college.
