Responsible Business
We are taking responsibility today,
for a sustainable future for coffee tomorrow.
By 2050, it’s estimated that approximately 50 percent of current global coffee acreage will be unsuitable for coffee farming. In addition to rising temperatures, extreme weather events and other impacts of climate change, future coffee supplies are threatened by erratic financial markets, political upheaval, migration, supply chain issues, urbanization and still other challenges.
We know there’s no one-size-fits all solution to sustainability. And we know that until coffee producers experience financial sustainability, they can’t prioritize environmental sustainability. For these reasons, the NKG Responsible Business Program has created a holistic plan for driving change that considers our NKG colleagues, our producing partners, our supply chains and the planet. We invite you to learn more about these ideas below.
The essential, missing piece in this plan is: You.
Only by working together today can we build a sustainable future for coffee tomorrow.
We invite you, most urgently, to join us.
Our Sustainability Initiatives
NKG Sustainability Report 2024
At NKG, our commitment to sustainability and responsible conduct is rooted in the understanding that coffee connects us to people, communities, and ecosystems worldwide. We recognize that the health and well-being of all of our stakeholders are essential, not only for their prosperity but also for our company’s long-term success. Therefore, we strive to ensure that everyone involved in bringing coffee from farm to cup can achieve a sustainable livelihood while preserving the environment we all rely on.
Guided by this responsibility, our core values and upcoming industry developments, we launched the NKG Responsible Business Program (RBP) in 2020. The RBP defines four focus areas and nine strategic objectives for our work, building a robust framework for our group’s sustainability efforts.
All objectives of the RBP are fully supported by our Board of Management and the operative management of all NKG companies. While the program is led and coordinated by Neumann Gruppe GmbH in Hamburg, its objectives are brought to life through close collaboration with our local teams around the world. These teams, representing diverse backgrounds and expertise, passionately implement the RBP within their respective national contexts and organizational structures. Their work is based on and driven by continuous innovation, industry partnerships, as well as transparent communication. By digitizing our operations, piloting new technologies, fostering industry collaborations, and ensuring transparent communication, we continuously enhance traceability and refine our group’s sustainability approach.
SUPPLIER: Code of Conduct
Sustainability and responsible conduct have always been integral to our work at NKG, as coffee connects us with people, communities and their natural environments all over the globe. Their health and wellbeing are fundamental for our company’s long-term success.
As our business environment is constantly changing, the RBP is reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that it matches with our long-term objectives and the needs of our stakeholders.

GRAINPRO HERMETIC BAG RECYCLING PROGRAM
A GRAINPRO – NEUMANN KAFFEE GRUPPE COLLABORATION
NKG and GrainPro Offer European Coffee Roasters New Recycling Option
We are proud to announce the expansion of our collaboration with GrainPro to introduce a convenient recycling initiative for Europe-based coffee roasters. This program, facilitated by NKG Kala Hamburg, underscores our shared commitment to sustainability in the coffee industry.
Building on the success of a similar initiative launched by Neumann Gruppe USA and GrainPro in the United States, the European program enables roasters to recycle used GrainPro Hermetic Bags and other coffee liners by delivering them to the NKG Kala Hamburg warehouse, either in person or via their preferred shipping service. From there, the materials are prepared for processing at an approved recycling facility. Unlike other recycling methods, such as the yellow bag or yellow bin system in Germany, this method recycles not only parts of the waste but the entire product.
Since its introduction in the U.S. in August 2023, the NGUS-GrainPro partnership has diverted more than 11 tons of used coffee liners from landfills. With the expansion to Europe, NKG and GrainPro aim to replicate this success and further contribute to reducing waste in the coffee supply chain. The initiative is supported by NKG’s European import and trading companies and reflects our broader efforts to support a more sustainable coffee ecosystem.

“Our collaboration with GrainPro reinforces NKG’s mission to build a sustainable future for coffee. By providing roasters with an accessible recycling option, we are making tangible progress in reducing waste and carbon emissions within our industry.”
Dr. Julius Wenzig, Environment and Climate Change Manager at Neumann Gruppe.
